The Toyota Prius is the world's first mass-market hybrid passenger car that is powered by both gasoline and electric engines. The Latin word prius (Jap. プリウス) in the model name is interpreted as the first, the original. The car has a low level of harmful emissions and low fuel consumption. For its environmental friendliness and original design it has won many prizes and awards, including being recognized as the car of the year in Japan, North America and Europe. Also, Toyota received an award from UNEP, the United Nations environmental protection agency, for developing world-friendly vehicles, including the Prius.
